Workers go missing after explosion in Ottawa

After a major explosion Thursday at a commercial building on Merivale Road south of West Hunt Club Road in Ottawa, five workers are still missing.

Authorities believe these people, four men and a woman, were inside the building at the time of the explosion. There is very little hope of finding these individuals alive, Ottawa police said in a statement released Friday.

“When we shared this news with family members, there was a whole range of emotion and we can understand,” said the spokesperson for the Ottawa police service.

The spouse of one of the workers Richard Bastien confirmed to TVA Nouvelles that her husband feared every morning that a disaster was happening at his work.

“I feel like he’s going to appear in the door, but I know deep down he’s gone. In the morning he said to me “Bye, have a nice day. I love you (…) He always told me. “There is someone who is going to die.” And he is the one who died I dare to believe that he did not suffer, I hope so with all my heart, ”said Louise Martel.

Thursday, three people had been transported to the emergency room for treatment of injuries. One of them, a man, succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Friday morning. Another is in critical but stable condition, according to authorities.

“The Office of the Fire Marshal has dispatched numerous investigators and will conduct the investigation to establish the origin and cause of the explosion and fire,” the statement read.
