The Netherlands coach said the formula to stop Haaland it was to prevent passes from reaching him, a tactic that was conspicuously absent in Oslo. The Borussia Dortmund striker scored a goal in the first half and slammed a ball into the wood in the second half, often beating the back of the Dutch defense.

Van Gaal’s imprint was seen from the starting lineup. The new coach reneged on the 5-3-2 used by his predecessor Frank de Boer in the Eurocup and drew the traditional 4-3-3 of the “Oranje”. He made his debut under the sticks to Justin Bijlow, from Feyenoord, and put Cody Gakpo as a left winger, who had only enjoyed eleven minutes in the Eurocup. However, the PSV Eindhoven player was quite off the mark.

The meeting was also the return of Virgil van Dijk to the defense of the Netherlands, after a year without participating in the national team due to the serious injury he suffered in October 2020. The duel between Van Dijk and Haaland took him the second to points. With Matthijs de Ligt suspended for accumulation of cards, Stefan de Vrij was the other chosen to try to stop the Borrusia Dortmund striker.

The Barcelona player Frenkie de Jong acted as organizer of the game in the center of the field and took a multitude of kicks, one of them from ex-Madrid player Odegaard, who therefore saw a yellow card. Barcelona’s other player in the Netherlands, Memphis Depay, tried again and again without success.

After the first ten minutes in which the “Clockwork Orange” dominated, Haaland’s first chance came. The forward, with a diagonal uncheck, beat Van Dijk and De Vrij in speed and faced a Bijlow who, thanks to his good positioning, cleared the shot.

At the second defensive failure of the Netherlands, the Norwegian forward did not forgive. Depay was not able to control an aerial ball cleared by a teammate of his, Norway recovered the ball and Haaland received it in the area, on his back and inexplicably alone. De Vrij and Van Dijk had advanced the line, but Gakpo had lagged behind, canceling the offside. The Liverpool center-back went desperately and touched the ball, but did not prevent the lethal shot from the Norwegian striker.

The goal put the Dutch on the ropes, as it encouraged the locals and shortly after Elyounoussi, totally alone in the area and with time to place the shot, wasted a golden opportunity by throwing the ball away from the goal.

When he was painting worst for “A Clockwork Orange”, Wijnaldum appeared. The Paris Saint-Germain footballer left on the right and made a low cross that, after touching the Norwegian defender Hanche-Olsen, fell in the vicinity of Klaassen. The Ajax midfielder gave him as he came and raised the tie to the scoreboard, a goal celebrated by Van Gaal angrily from the bench.

The goal was a shock for “Oranje”, as they regained control of the game against a Norway that only showed its teeth when Haaland touched it. This dynamic was repeated at the beginning of the second half, with the Dutch dominating and enjoying opportunities. Van Dijk tried his head and Depay from afar, twice stopped by AndrĂ© Hansen.

The locals expected to withdraw, a tactic that was about to pay off in 65 with a counterattack. Odegaard made a cross pass to Haaland and the forward, with his left foot and first, crashed the ball into the post.

Although the occasion helped Norway to regain control of the ball, the Dutch were the ones who tried the most towards the end of the match. In the last minute of injury time, Depay gave it to Klaassen, who put it in the small area and Dumfries hooked it with stumbling, in a faulty shot that was stopped between a defender and the goalkeeper.

With today’s results, the Netherlands and Norway are tied with 7 points in Group G qualifying for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, while Turkey, which also tied with Montenegro today, remains in the lead with 8 points.
