The year 2022 will certainly be full of surprises with highly anticipated series on Disney+, like Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. And a new announcement has just enriched the future catalog of the platform, with an essential science fiction film who is going to get his own series.
A sci-fi classic picked up by dISNEY+
The Disney+ platform is currently in the early stages of development for a film adaptation Real Steel (whose name was based on the new Steel by author Richard Matheson). Hugh Jackman played Charlie Kenton in the film Real Steel released in 2011, where he played a former boxer who, with his son, recover an abandoned combat robot, repairs it and makes it participate in boxing tournaments.
From what we know at the moment, the director of Real Steel, Shawn Levy, would also be an executive producer. The other executive producers are Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke from Compari Entertainment. We also know that Jacqueline Levine, Susan Montford and Don Murphy from Angry Films will work on the series. 20th Television will produce the series.
And what about the other actors?
The other actors of the film Real Steel were Dakota Goyo (Max Kenton), Evangeline Lilly (Bailey Tallet), Anthony Mackie (Finn), Olga Fonda (Farra Lemkova) et Karl Yune (Tak Mashido). Although the film was not a huge box office success when it was released, it became a worldwide success with a little less than $300 million in revenue, while its budget was around $110 million.
Discussions to give a follow-up to the films started in 2011, with Shawn Levy which raised the possibility of bringing back Hugh Jackman. Recently, the director said to:
It’s been on my mind and in conversation a lot lately. Maybe because when Netflix started streaming it during lockdown, it became one of their most trending and watched titles. Which brought Hugh and me back to talking about this love for Real Steel. We realized we loved it too. We have always loved it so much. It’s one of those times when you never say never, even though it feels like time has passed on that window of opportunity. It feels like the love from fans and audiences hasn’t gone away. So who knows?
Last October marked the 10th anniversary of Real Steel, and Evangeline Lilly spoke to the Hollywood Reporter of a possible Levy sequel. She declares “Actually, yes, we spoke recently”. A sentence that points to a possible return of the actress in the series.
