Over the past week, comments were expressed about our business in connection with events that occurred many years ago. The concerns they raise are legitimate because they went against the values we all hold dear. Those involved have dishonored the proud history of a more than 100-year-old company and undermined the morale of more than 30,000 dedicated employees.
Those of us who are currently in leadership positions in the company have a very clear position about the infractions that have taken place: they are unacceptable. We took note of these actions, apologized and held to account. Most importantly, we’ve made some deep and meaningful changes to make sure this never happens again.
Today our business is different, in every way imaginable, than it was 10 or 20 years ago when the events that tarnished our reputation occurred. We sincerely and truly believe that, through honest thinking, hard work, efforts at reinvention and concrete measures applied over nearly 10 years, we have done our homework and transformed the company in depth.
We have successfully instilled a culture of ethics to prevent the possibility of mischief and breach of compliance. A culture that allows employees to speak safely if they witness unethical behavior or actions. I am aware that this statement may arouse some cynicism. And that’s the rub. People only see the past, not the future. The facts mentioned are not false, but they simply do not represent who we are today.
I’m not asking for my word to be taken. The story of our transformation is also told by others. The Ethisphere Institute, a world leader in defining and raising the standards of ethical business practices, announced earlier this year that it was renewing SNC-Lavalin’s coveted Compliance Leader Verification recognition. in 2019.
Last April, the World Bank Group early lifted all sanctions imposed on SNC-Lavalin in 2013 for a period of 10 years. This decision, made following a rigorous evaluation and monitoring process by World Bank authorities and the independent watchdog, confirmed that SNC-Lavalin had complied with all terms of the settlement agreement. .
Our history cannot ignore our past, but it also tells, and above all, what has become of us. Established in Quebec, we are a leading professional services and project management company with offices around the world. We develop sustainable solutions to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges, and our expertise is globally recognized and highly respected. We are determined to shape a better future for our planet and those who inhabit it thanks to the work of thousands of employees in Quebec, the rest of the country and around the world.
Our history demonstrates our ability to grow and make a commitment to business excellence; to learn, to change and to move forward. Which SNC-Lavalin will you be referring to in your next conversation?
