Struff uses third match point against Shapovalov: Germany leads against Canada

On Thursday, the German Davis Cup team will face Canada in the quarter-finals. In Malaga, the duel began with a thriller that Jan-Lennard Struff won against Denis Shapovalov.

Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Denis Shapovalov in three sets.

Jan-Lennard Struff opened the door to the semifinals for the German Davis Cup team. The 32-year-old Warsteiner managed against the world number 18. Shapovalov’s somewhat surprising lead to 1-0 against co-favorite Canada. Struff prevailed with a consistent performance in Malaga 6: 3, 4: 6, 7: 6 (7: 2).

As a result, Oscar Otte (Cologne) in the second individual against world number six Felix Auger-Aliassime already has the chance to secure the semi-finals for the team of national coach Michael Kohlmann, who competed without top player Alexander Zverev, as in the previous year.

Should this not succeed, the still undefeated doubles Kevin Krawietz/Tim Pütz (Coburg/Frankfurt) would be challenged in the decisive duel. Opponents in the semifinals would be the Italians, who had previously beaten the USA 2-1. The last German triumph in the Davis Cup was in 1993.

Struff lives up to his role as a points provider

Struff had won all three of his singles in the group phase in Hamburg and was a guarantee for entering the knockout phase. In the match against Shapovalov (ATP-18th), he went with a 5:3 balance, but after a difficult season overall and with his current world ranking position 152, he was an outsider.

Tie-break thriller in the third set

However, there was little sign of that from the start, Struff was in immediately and secured the first set with strong service and an almost flawless performance. In the second round Shapovalov improved and dominated especially after his strong first serve. Struff was not deterred by the setback and in the end brought the match home safely with the third match ball.
