Costa del Sol Malaga, team of Brazilians Talita Alves and Isabelle Medeiros, was runner-up in the 2021/2022 European Women’s Handball Cup. Playing with the support of their fans, the team won the second game of the final against Rocasa Gran Canaria by 29-25, this Saturday (14), but did not take the title because of the away goals criteria. The first game had been 21 to 17 for Rocasa.

Needing to reverse a four-goal deficit, Malaga went all out for the attack from the start. Led by Isabelle Medeiros, who ended the match as the top scorer, with 11 goals scored, the home team had six goals in front in the first half. In the second half, however, Rocasa Gran Canaria reacted and managed to reduce the difference to a goal with 11 minutes left.

From there to the end, it was pure emotion. Costa del Sol Malaga once again prevailed and had a streak of five straight goals to make it 27-22, which was enough to give them the title. The five-goal advantage remained until the final minute, when, in the last possession, Spughini Santomé hit the shot and scored the 25th goal of the visiting team, securing the title for Rocasa Gran Canaria.

Despite the defeat, this final was marked in history for Costa del Sol Malaga. The match registered an attendance of 7,183 people at the Palacio de los Deportes, being the largest attendance of a women’s handball match on Spanish soil. The duel surpassed the 5,000 present in Spain and Hungary, valid for this year’s European Qualifiers.

Gabi in the European League final

Two other Brazilian women also got into action this Saturday, for the Final 4 of the European Women’s Handball League, but only one did well. German Bietigheim, owned by Gabi Moreschi, defeated Herning-Ikast, from Denmark, 34-33, and advanced to the final of the competition. The Brazilian played for a few moments and made a save in seven shots (14.29%).

In the decision, Bietigheim will face the Danish Viborg, who plays at home. The team beat Romanian Minaur Baia Mare, team of Karol Souza and Elaine Gomes, in the semifinal, by 28 to 24. Of the two Brazilians that make up the team’s squad, only Karol played and didn’t score goals. The decision will take place this Sunday (15), at 1 pm, Brasília time.
