Seven seconds missing to victory: DSV relay runs for the first time on the podium

The German biathletes achieved their first relay podium of the Olympic season at their home World Cup in Ruhpolding on Saturday. The DSV quartet with Erik Lesser, Roman Rees, Benedikt Doll and Philipp Nawrath took a strong second place behind Russia. Belarus finished third.

Benedikt Doll also underlined his good form in the season.

The DSV quartet narrowly missed their first relay win in ten months. Lesser, Rees, who fell on the shooting range, Doll and Nawrath only had two spare rounds on Saturday, giving the Russians a seven-second advantage. Three weeks before the start of the Winter Games in Beijing, Belarus (+23 seconds) secured third place after 4 x 7.5 kilometers.

In the two previous seasons, the German men had finished fourth. Most recently, the protégés of national coach Mark Kirchner won in Nove Mesto on March 5, 2021 in the cast Lesser, Doll, Arnd Peiffer and Nawrath.

The two-time winners of the season from Norway, where the top stars around Johannes Thingnes Bö were missing because of a training camp, only ended up in seventh place. There were problems in the first shooting, which resulted in two minutes being awarded to the Norwegians.
