50 Cent details the importance of hiring Lil Meech to play his father in “BMF.”
It’s not uncommon to see rappers turning to television and acting as soon as their tenure in the rap game ends. Ice-T, Ice Cube , e LL Cool J were all successfully established as actors just as a new breed of MCs came into the game to change the culture. 50 Cent, however, may not be acting as deeply as the aforementioned rappers turned actors, but his efforts as a television executive have proven to be quite fruitful.
Last month, the rapper debuted the long-awaited series based on the life and times of the Black Mafia Family. The stories of Big Meech and Southwest T are being told in the Starz BMF series. The real sons of Big Meech and Southwest T are acting on the show. Fif and the cast of BMF were on the cover of the latest issue of XXL, where 50 Cent discussed their empire on television, among other topics.
The rapper also explained the importance of bringing such a raw story to television and bringing an authentic touch to the screen. 50 Cent explained that he was getting offers in California for actors who could take the lead role. None of them met the standards of 50 Cent.
50 Cent said he went to Atlanta to cast the show when he ended up meeting Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory Jr. “He looks more like his father on the show than he did that day,” explained Fif. From there, he took Flenory Jr. to California to work with acting coaches. “Your dad didn’t even know he was doing this,” said 50 Cent.
“The meaning of him being able to play his dad, for me, what I’m really excited about is his dad. When he’s on the phone, he calls and talks and says, ‘I don’t know if you’re aware of this when you were doing it, but you brought him closer to me. Because he’s spending more time thinking about the things we’ve been through, things we’ve done and he’s not going to jail.’”
