"Yumbel Altarpiece": work in homage to disappeared detainees returns to Concepción 36 years later

“Retablo de Yumbel”, by the Chilean playwright Isidora Aguirre, debuted on the penquista billboard in 1986. “The country was going through difficult days and it was not easy to keep the work on the billboard,” they recall from the company.

A statement issued by the theater group explains the motivations behind the milestone: “On the one hand, to honor its author, who maintained an artistic relationship with the city for many years, and on the other, due to the need to contribute to the collective memory region of”.

“This work was requested from its author in 1984 by the group, as a reminder and tribute to the disappeared detainees in the area,” says the same text.

In the eighties, within the framework of the first staging of “Retablo de Yumbel”, the group was invited to a theater festival in Nicaragua and offered performances in Costa Rica. There, among other Chileans, they were welcomed by the penquista painter Julio Escamez.

“Several performances were held in Concepción, with a good reception from the public. The country was going through difficult days and it was not easy to keep the work on the billboard”they remember from the company.

“Finally, this dream could be realized. Teatro El Rostro has prepared a second show, which will begin to be broadcast this June 29 and 30 in the Steel Artists Room 100, at 7:00 p.m., for a limited audience, specially invited for the occasion,” they reported.

The current cast is made up of Cecilia Beltrán, Carlos Fuentealba, Roxana Gutiérrez, Daniela Marín, Franco Molina, Julieta Sáez, Yanina Susperregui and Alfredo Ramírez. The address fell to Ximena Ramirez and Alvaro Saez.
