The coordinator of the National Guard in Zacatecas, General José Silvestre Urzúa Padilla, died this Thursday during a confrontation in the municipality of Pinos in Zacatecas. In a message via Twitter, Governor David Monreal confirmed the death of the general and sent his condolences to his relatives.
“Those of us who make up the State Peacebuilding Table report with regret the death of General José Silvestre Urzúa Padilla, coordinator of the National Guard in the state. We send our condolences to his family and loved ones.
“I have issued instructions to report what happened as soon as possible. We will not rest in our fight to pacify the state and deal with crime, the desire to which the general gave his life. Rest in peace,” said the president.
Security Cabinet sources confirmed that General José Silvestre Urzúa died during a confrontation between members of the corporation with suspected members of organized crime in the community of Pino, after the deployment of a search, search and target location operation in the municipality adjacent to the state of San Luis Potosí.
During the operation, the security forces were attacked by armed civilians and after repelling the attack, five agents were injured, three belonging to the National Guard and two more from the Investigative Police, but General Urzúa Padilla died while being treated at the hospital. This is the highest-ranking command killed in the line of duty since the corporation was launched in June 2019.
