José Sifuentes Osornio is the new director of the National Institute of Nutrition

The doctor Joseph Sifuentes Osornio protested this Monday as general director of the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition ‘Salvador Zubirán’ (INCMNSZ) for the period 2022-2020.

Upon taking office, the Secretary of Health, Jorge Alcocer Varela, affirmed that the country faces key moments and challenges such as the transformation of health services for people without social security, which implies commitments and difficult paths, but with good results.

He stressed that the inauguration of the new director represents a special moment “for all of you, all of our families that we have forged through great women and men who have contributed over many years to the right to health be a reality. Let it be a free, equitable and universal reality, ”she specified.

The new general director of the INCMNSZ, José Sifuentes Osornio, endorsed the commitment to continue the policy of free health services, with priority given to the vulnerable population that does not have social security coverage.

He maintained that he will contribute and join forces to face the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the challenges of adapting to the new conditions of the National Health System.

“I fully understand the responsibility of this institution, where innovative models of care, training of medical and scientific human resources of international quality, scientific research for the generation of knowledge and sustainable proposals for the nutrition of the Mexican population have been developed,” he concluded. .

José Sifuentes Osornio is a medical surgeon from the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí (UASLP). He studied the specialty in Internal Medicine at the INCMNSZ, where he graduated with the thesis Miliary Tuberculosis: Analysis of 78 cases treated at the National Institute of Nutrition Salvador Zubirán. In this institution he studied the subspecialty of Infectious Diseases; He did a postdoctoral fellow in Clinical Microbiology at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, United States.

In the INCMNSZ he was president of the committees of Pharmacy and Therapeutics and Transfusion Medicine; as well as a member of the Clinical File, Electronic Clinical File and Patient Safety committees. Likewise, he coordinated the Preparation Committee for the Attention of the Epidemic by SARS-CoV-2 in 2020.

He has worked as a professor of the specialty of Infectious Diseases at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He tutored the master’s and doctoral programs in Medical Sciences and Biomedical Sciences and has trained more than 100 specialists in Infectology and Clinical Microbiology, as well as more than 150 infectologists, pediatricians and epidemiologists.

He served as president of the College of Internal Medicine of Mexico (1993-1994); president of the Mexican Association of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (2010-2012); head of the Infectology Section at the National Academy of Medicine (2011-2012); member of the Governing Board of the Children’s Hospital of Mexico “Federico Gómez” (2008-2016), and president of the Department of Medicine of the National Academy of Medicine (2014-2016).

He is a Level III national researcher of the National System of Researchers (SNI), a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, as well as the American Academy of Microbiology and the American College of Physicians.
