WARNING: This story contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Marvel’s new sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness brought some really big surprises when it hit theaters this month, and Daniel Craig would have been almost among them. As expected, many main characters have been introduced, and this notably includes a special appearance from the Illuminati. Fans were aware of Patrick Stewart’s return as Professor X entering the film, as revealed in previously released trailers, but more surprises were in store for the big screen.
One of the biggest reveals was John Krasinski as the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards. It was an amazing moment for so many fans, because Krasinski has long been a fan-favorite actor that people were hoping to get the role in the The Fantastic Four reboot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are rumors that Krasinski was not the only actor to participate in this special appearance.
According to Deadline’s Justin Kroll, Krasinski’s Mister Fantastic “wasn’t the first choice” for the special Illuminati cameo. Kroll also claims that James Bond actor Daniel Craig was originally meant to appear at this location. Kroll says Craig was close to firing until a spike in COVID cases caused him to reconsider, so he backed off to avoid the risk of spreading the disease to his family.
An additional rumor published by The Direct claims that Craig did not play Mister Fantastic, but rather another member of the Illuminati in these scenes. Apparently it would have been like Balder the Brave, brother of Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Rumored to have Craig stepping down had creatives cut Balder out of the story altogether and replace him with Krasinksi’s Reed Richards. As of now, none of this has been officially confirmed by those involved.
Will Daniel Craig join the MCU?
If the rumors are true, it would suggest that Daniel Craig is interested in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though Balder’s cameo didn’t work out for Doctor Strange 2. He will have time to join the franchise after his exit from the James Bond series. A popular character that has been suggested a lot for Craig is the supervillain Magneto, and with the arrival of the X-Men in the MCU on the horizon, this character will need a good actor to bring him to life soon. Fan art has even been done imagining him in the role.
It may be a matter of time before Craig makes his way into the MCU. For now, fans can expect to see him return to his popular role as Benoit Blanc in Knives Out 2one of two sequels Knives out which is currently in the works at Netflix. Knives Out 2 is set to hit the streamer later this year.
