The Covid pandemic has hit film productions in different ways, and Mission : Impossible 7 did not come out unscathed. The global pandemic was responsible for a number of delays in filming Ethan Hunt’s comeback, which ultimately prevented director Christopher McQuarrie from realizing his original intention to shoot the eighth film back-to-back with the seventh.
According to franchise newcomer Cary Elwes, the director was also forced to direct part of the film from a home computer after experiencing a fear of Covid and was unable to go to work on set.
Filming for the film finally ended in September, a month after the originally scheduled release date. With so many films having fluidity when it comes to release dates, it wasn’t surprising to see Mission : Impossible 7 having been pushed back more than once until it now appears to have set a release date of September 30, 2022, when we can finally see the final outing of Cruise’s action hero. This time around, franchise regulars Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson, along with new hires Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales, Hayley Atwell and Cary Elwes, will join Cruise.
While being interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, Elwes, whose role in the film has so far not been disclosed, commented on McQuarrie’s talent for being able to continue directing from home after being tracked down by contact as potentially exposed to Covid. Elwes noted:
“I don’t think I’m saying anything new when I say production struggled and they had to stop. Chris McQuarrie therefore had to conduct from his home computer because he had been traced. And that’s a testament to how brilliant he is, that he’s been able to do it. He said, “Look, I never want to do this again” – but he succeeded. We did it. And this will be the greatest mission of all, there is no doubt about it.
While a director’s job on a film set is to educate actors, a crew, and many stuntmen for an action blockbuster like a Mission impossible movie, playing that role from a distance requires a certain skill base that McQuarrie has developed over the years since his involvement in the franchise since 2015, but his history in the industry dates back much further than that. In addition to being a screenwriter on The usual suspects and Edge of tomorrow, he embarked on the making of another Tom Cruise film, Jack Reach in 2012, and in recent years has continued to redefine the path of Mission impossible films thanks to Rogue nation and Publication date.
Filming is almost ready to start on Mission : Impossible 8 in various locations across Europe, and Tom Cruise has been seen undertaking training, including flying lessons, ahead of his usual self-performed stunts in the film, which is currently set for a July 22, 2023 release date.
Avan Jogia became a huge fan of the Resident Evil games and his many hours of playing as Leon helped prepare him for the role.
