Government – green electricity subsidy will be canceled in 2022 due to expensive energy

The green electricity subsidy will be canceled in the coming year in view of the high energy prices. All domestic households and companies will be exempted from this in 2022. This was decided by the climate protection ministry in agreement with the economics ministry. The relevant ordinance will come into force on January 1st, the climate protection ministry announced on Thursday. For an average household, this would result in cost savings of around 67 euros in 2022.

This saves an average commercial enterprise around 67,000 euros. “That is an important relief – especially in view of the rising energy prices,” said Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens). Last year, electricity customers had to pay around 580 million euros under this heading, the “Presse” wrote on Thursday in its online report on the failure of the green electricity subsidy. The metering point subsidy fee of 35 euros per customer, however, remains unaffected, according to the newspaper. This year, according to the E-Control regulator, the total green electricity load for an average household customer was around 110 euros including taxes.

Chaplain: “Financial relief”

The elimination of the green electricity subsidy is “a noticeable financial relief for the people in Austria and significantly exceeds the current rise in electricity costs”, according to the ministry. Especially in times of rising energy prices, this has an important balancing effect. Most recently, the sharp rise in gas prices also led to a significant increase in prices on the electricity market.

It is possible that the renewables subsidy could be exempted for 2022, as there would have been a surplus of subsidies in 2021. “Because of the high energy prices on the electricity market, fewer funds were needed to offset the market price,” said the Climate Protection Ministry. These surpluses would now be used to promote the expansion of renewable energies in 2022. In this way, a relief of the people can be ensured despite a further expansion of renewable energies. Because only this expansion will make Austria independent of Russian gas companies and Saudi oil multinationals in the long term, according to Gewessler. (apa)
