she dances on top of this Mayan pyramid and angers internet users (13 tweets)

Climb a Archeological site renowned for doing buzz and turn a viral video, it’s not a good idea. A tourist recently paid the price by climbing a mayan pyramid however, access is prohibited.

Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World

If you may not know them all, you must have already heard of the seven wonders of the world. Composed of the pyramid of Cheops (Egypt) or the temple of Artemis (Ionia, present-day Turkey), they designate the architectural and artistic works considered to be the most impressive of the ancient world. In 2007, the organization New Seven Wonders Foundation held a vote to establish the “New Seven Wonders of the World”.

These, you know them at least by name: we find the Taj Mahal (India), the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu (Peru), or the ancient Mayan city of Chichén Itzá (Mexico). It is an extremely visited archaeological site, entered the heritage of UNESCO in 1998 and former religious center of Yucatan, peninsula located in the south of the country. As saying that Disrespecting such a site can get you in serious trouble.

A little too enterprising tourist

If there is one thing that annoys the inhabitants of a country, it is when foreign tourists lack respect and believe that everything is allowed. Take the example of this tourist whose identity remains unknown, but who has been the subject of a huge bad buzz for a few days. This one has indeed climbed the Mayan pyramid of Kukulcan, located in the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá. What was already considered a lack of respect turned into a real provocation when the woman started dancing at the top of the pyramid.

In the video of the event, we hear the people present on the spot shouting “jail” (“jail”), IWhen a site staff member leaves to ask the tourist to come down. Once down, this one was taken to task, having their hair pulled, insulted, or sprayed with water. Legally, she risks a fine of up to 8,500 euros.

Posted earlier this week the video of this event went viral, accumulating more than 210,000 likes at the time of this writing and generating many outraged reactions from Internet users on Twitter. We leave you with some of them.

Imagine someone from Mexico doing anything anywhere near this disrespectful to an American monument. Every media outlet would be running the video continuously for weeks. But when Americans do it to a Mexican monument, it’s not news.

Imagine someone from Mexico doing something nearly as disrespectful to an American monument. Each medium would run the video continuously for weeks. But when Americans put that on a Mexican monument, it’s not news.

I’m sure they the pyramids took a huge hit with all that foot traffic and they had to change the rules to preserve it. People should respect that regardless of what country they’re from. ALWAYS respect the people and lands you visit on your travels. You are a guest!!

I visited here. They made it CLEAR that climbing is prohibited because not only were people abusing the privilege to walk on them, but they would chip off pieces of the structure and take fragments home…or engraved marks in it. People have no respect with or without the rule. pic.twitter.com/m6vg1lSC02

WOW. This is beyond disrespectful.

WOW. It’s beyond disrespect.

And then she had to dance once at the top. Hmm. There are human remains inside there. It’s like dancing on top of a grave. Disrespect.

Imagine if someone climbed up on the altar in a cathedral and did a rude dance—this pyramid is sacred and that’s what she did

She thought they were cheering her on, until she found herself in that crowd

The crowd yelling “jail, jail, jail!” makes me feel better about society seeing these acts as egregious rather than applaudable
