BBVA creates a global software unit with more than 16,000 developers

The new unit is responsible for the execution and coordination of the bank’s main technological transformation programs at a global level.

BBVA launched a new global software division that groups together more than 16,000 developers. It is a new structure, led by Francisco Leyva, until now responsible for engineering and data at BBVA Mexico, which aims to accelerate the delivery of digital solutions and make them more easily scalable between the countries where the bank operates.

The new unit is responsible for the execution and coordination of the bank’s main technological transformation programs at a global level., “ensuring increased productivity, updating, security and quality of software development,” explained from the entity chaired by Carlos Torres.

“To date, in the engineering field, we had advanced in the creation of numerous global functions (infrastructure, communications, architecture), which direct and coordinate the execution of the strategy with the local units. The increasing relevance of software development calls for this same level of globalization to take advantage of globality “, says Francisco Leyva.

More than 16,000 developers in this unit

BBVA launched a new global software division

Between internal and external personnel, more than 16,000 people are dedicated to designing, developing or maintaining the software in this new unit.

To achieve this, this division was integrated into the bank’s engineering area, incorporating among its reports the design and development teams in all the countries where the group has a presence, as well as the global development teams.

In addition, codependencies have been established with the global solutions architecture units, software development transformation and with BBVA Next Technologies, a group company that is an expert in software engineering, and Veridas, a biometric technology company created by BBVA and das-Nano.

Development that can be shared globally

Software development is one of the main levers for generating value

The objective of this new software development unit is to build services that can be shared in the apps of all countries and that also have a common data model.

Accelerating the construction of these common components will allow us to deploy services globally, without having to start from scratch in each country. Globalizing these components in all countries would take us eight years under normal conditions but with these advances we want to do it in four “, adds the manager

The bank warns that software development is one of the main levers of value generation for the group’s business.
