Regarding the regulations: The first in each group qualifies directly for the round of 16, while the second in the second round meets the third group of the Champions League. Matches between clubs of the same national association are excluded. Those who finish the preliminary round in third place in a group will also winter in Europe, but then have to start in the Europa Conference League in spring. Only the fourth group are safely out.

In Group a Everything has already been decided: Olympique Lyon (15 points) have qualified for the round of 16, the Glasgow Rangers (7) have qualified for the second round because of the direct comparison they have won with Sparta Prague (4). Prague and Brondy IF (2) determine third place in a direct duel in the Czech capital.

Niko Kovac and AS Monaco (11 points) have won Group B First place secured. PSV Eindhoven (8) and Real Sociedad San Sebastian (6) fight for second place in a direct duel in the Basque Country. Sturm Graz (1) was eliminated.

However, there is a lot of excitement Group Cwhere all four teams still have a chance of advancing. Leicester (8 points), Spartak Moscow (7), SSC Napoli (7) and Legia Warsaw (6) are just two points apart. Napoli meet Leicester, Legia receive Spartak.

Eintracht Frankfurt (11 points) and Olympiakos Piraeus (9) determine on the last day of the Group D First place in the long-distance duel. The SGE is required at Fenerbahce (5), the Greeks in Antwerp (2). Fener certainly has third place, as they won the direct comparison against Antwerp.

Lazio ranks 8 points in Group E Second place, but with a home win against Galatasaray (11) they can push the Turks out of first place. Olympique Marseille (4) and Lokomotiv Moscow (2) are saying goodbye to the Europa League and are fighting for third place in a direct duel in southern France.

It gets tricky in Group F., where league leaders Red Star Belgrade (10 points) would go on to win or draw on the last matchday at Sporting Braga (9). FC Midtjylland (8) is lurking and has the supposedly easier task with the Bulgarians Ludogorez Rasgrad (1) who have already left.

In Group G the die is cast in the meantime: Bayer Leverkusen (13 points) have secured the round of 16 ticket due to the direct comparison they have made with Real Betis (10). The Spaniards comfort themselves with the second round, as they can neither be overtaken by Celtic Glasgow (6), which can already adjust to the Conference League, nor by Ferencvaros Budapest (0).

13 points after five matchdays are enough for West Ham United in Group H.to secure first place and thus a place in the round of the last 16. The English could tip the scales in the race for second place, as they will receive second place Dinamo Zagreb (7) on the last match day. KRC Genk (5) as third has a home game against Rapid Wien (3), which can qualify for the Conference League with a three.
