The personnel situation in the three-man chain at Mainz 05 does not offer any real relaxation. So it is a good thing that David Nemeth gained match practice after his first Bundesliga appearance with the Austrian U21s.
David Nemeth could soon move into the starting line-up at Mainz.
Because that is a factor that the young defender was missing until October 3rd. Bo Svensson brought in Nemeth for Jeremiah St. Juste, who was injured in the shoulder, against 1. FC Union (1: 2). A decent Bundesliga debut with light in the form of a ball conquest before the opening goal and shadow in the form of a lost duel against Taiwo Awoniyi, who was strong that day, before the 1: 2. Can happen at the entrance to the first floor. Will this first be followed by the second outing on Saturday at Borussia Dortmund (3:30 p.m., LIVE! At kicker)?
Last fit central defender
Well, St. Juste is still missing. It is still unclear whether the Dutchman needs an operation. Moussa Niakhate is back for good and is therefore seated next to Stefan Bell. But will Alexander Hack be at one hundred percent by the weekend? The 28-year-old only completed running training on Tuesday. That does not necessarily speak in favor of a starting eleven at BVB. That means: In addition to the trained full-backs Silvan Widmer and Anderson Lucoqui – Svensson trusts both of them to play the role in the back three – Nemeth would be the top candidate for the place next to Bell and Niakhate. And the Austrian is the only trained central defender that the FSV squad still has.
It may be seen as a concession to the FSV that ÖFB youth coach Werner Gregoritsch brought Nemeth in the final phase of the 3-1 draw against Finland this Tuesday in Tampere. In Pärnu, in the mandatory 4-0 win over Estonia, Nemeth was still in the starting line-up. Immediately after the decisive 3-0 win, Gregoritsch got the 20-year-old off the pitch five days after his Bundesliga debut. That substitution against Berlin was Nemeth’s first compulsory club appearance in the current season, after he felt like half of the Mainz squad had to pass with Corona in August.
Its robustness also speaks for Nemeth
The latest accumulated match experience could help the youngster to confirm his status as an alternative at Svensson faster. With a view to Dortmund, robustness and tough duels speak for Nemeth, while Widmer, who was preferred against 1. FC Union as Niakhate representative, has advantages in terms of speed.
