Villarreal and Atalanta draw 2-2 in their start in the Champions League

The Villarreal tied 2-2 with Atalanta, this Tuesday on the opening day of the Champions League at the La Cerámica stadium, in a match that ended with ten due to the expulsion of Francis Coquelin (84).

The Swiss Remo Freuler put Atalanta ahead (6), but Manu Trigueros put the tie (39), Danjuma put the 2-1 (73) and the German Robin Gosens scored the final 2-2 (82).

The tie leaves Atalanta and Villarreal, second and third respectively of the Group F, behind the leader, the Swiss Young Boys, who beat Manchester United 2-1 on Tuesday, in the other game of the key.

«I am satisfied, we play against a great team. We played very well the first 30 minutes. We were strong enough to keep the ball because if you lose it too much, you get punished, ”Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini said after the Sky Italia match.

Villarreal was outmatched in the early stages of the match by the intensity of the Italian team, which was pressing very high.

‘Difficult match’

“It was a difficult game, in which the start was difficult for us, we suffered his game,” Villarreal midfielder Dani Parejo told the Movistar + platform on the field.

Amid inaccuracies and errors, Villarreal soon finished behind on the scoreboard when Remo Freuler unleashed a shot on a pass from Duván Zapata to make it 1-0 (6).

The Italians progressed down the sides, with fast starts and long balls in search of the leading men Zapata, Matteo Pessini and Ruslan Malinovsky.

Villarreal tried to come out from behind with the ball under control and little by little the rival pressure was shaking off.

“We have remade ourselves and little by little we have taken the game where we wanted,” said the Submarine coach, Unai Emery, to Movistar +.

At half an hour, Gerard Moreno gave the first warning with a shot almost point-blank that the Argentine goalkeeper of Atalanta Juan Musso (34) took out.

Five minutes later, with Villarreal on the rise, Manu Trigueros, who had previously put the ball to Moreno, caught a bounced ball in goal to make it 1-1 (39).

The Spanish team had gone from dominated to dominate in the last minutes of the first half, which could end the 2-1 for Villarreal after a Gerard Moreno header from point-blank range that Musso took out (42).

Brushing up on victory

After the break, Villarreal seemed to cut off their good progression at the end of the first half, again suffering against the visiting dominance.

The ball had barely started to roll again when Malinovsky fired a shot from Villarreal’s Argentine goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli (47) and Colombian Duván Zapata sent a shot to the laguero (54).

As happened in the first half, Villarreal progressively grew again, ending up putting pressure on Atalanta.

A quarter of an hour from the end the Dutchman Danjuma appeared, arrived at Villarreal in the last market, to finish off a pass from Gerard Moreno before the departure of Musso and make it 2-1 (73).

Both Danjuma, who had entered the field in the 60th minute, encouraged Villarreal, who when they seemed to have controlled the match suffered two blows in a row with a goal by Robin Gosens (82) and the expulsion of Francis Coquelin (84) for a double warning .

The Frenchman spent just 24 minutes on the pitch, having entered the 60th minute.

Villarreal ended the game trying to avoid the attacks of Atalanta to get a point.

«In the second half, the 2-1 gave us a feeling that the game could be ours, but that it was not final, then the draw has arrived that has left us with doubts and we have already ended up trying not to have anything else happen Emery concluded.
