After the 1-0 defeat in Panama, the USA scored an important victory in the fight for the World Cup. Against Costa Rica, coach Gregg Berhalter’s team fell behind in the first minute, but hit back in the 25th minute through Sergino Dest. When the score was 1: 1, it went into the break.

Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas did not come back. The goalkeeper, who made his 99th international match, probably sustained an adductor injury in the first round – how serious the injury is is still unclear, but the 34-year-old may also have to go to Paris, where he will be with Italy’s European champion Gianluigi Donnarumma vies for the position in the goal, pause.

From Costa Rica’s point of view, twice as bitter: Navas’ representative Leonel Moreira played a decisive role in the defeat: The LD Alajuelense goalkeeper from the national league scored an unfortunate own goal. Timothy Weah had shot the ball from close range to the post, from there the ball bounced on Moreira’s back and then over the line to the 2-1 final score (66th).

The USA increased their points account to eleven points and ranked behind Mexico in the table. Costa Rica’s chances of winning the World Cup are falling, the coastal state ranks two points behind Panama in fifth place. While the first three qualify directly for the tournament in Qatar, the fourth plays playoffs against a representative from the Asian, Oceanic or South American continental associations.

Davies scores in Canada’s win

The third-placed Canada meanwhile remains fully on course for the World Cup. The North Americans won 4-1 against their table neighbors Panama, Alphonso Davies, who is now on his way back to Munich, also entered the list of goalscorers. The goal to make it 2-1 by Bayern’s winger put Canada on the winning road in the 66th minute after an early deficit.
