Adaptations to climate change
Although heavy rainfall is increasing, damage from landslides in Austria has been kept constant, shows a recent study
Heavy rain events will continue to increase in the future – they have already become more frequent in Austria over the past 60 years. As typical triggers of landslides, they also represent a danger in this respect: During the same period, settlement construction has expanded to include exposed locations. However, a study by ZAMG and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna also provides good news. Because despite these developments, damaging mudslides have remained constant – in number, size and seasonality. This is probably due to the fact that there are also more highly effective protective structures, writes the research group in the journal “Climate Risk Management”.
