Third wave of COVID-19 is reduced throughout Mexico, says López-Gatell

In this regard, Undersecretary Hugo López-Gatell stressed that the transmission of COVID-19 is reduced throughout the territory about three months after the start of the third wave of infections, which has brought the greatest infections of the entire pandemic.

“The reduction of the epidemic continues at the national level and the 32 states are already the ones that have a clear tendency to reduce cases”, he assured at the press conference from the National Palace.

Mexico surpassed 3.5 million cases this weekend and accumulates almost 268,000 deaths, the fourth highest figure in the world, with days exceeding 15,000 infections in recent weeks.

But López-Gatell assured that 95% of the cases are mild, pointing out that hospitalization for COVID-19 shows a 59% reduction from the peak.

“It continues to decline for six consecutive weeks, the COVID hospitals are already beginning to be vacated as there are more people who are discharged with recovery than people who are admitted,” said the undersecretary.

RETURN TO CLASSES

The official also defended that the return to face-to-face classes, for two weeks, it has not caused an upturn in infections.

So far 138,000 schools have reopened to which 1.26 million teachers and 13.2 million students have returned, out of a total of more than 30 million enrolled before the pandemic, as presented by the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) at the conference.

“It is not shown that there is an increase in the cases of minors, despite the fact that it has been two weeks since the schools were opened, on August 20, the epidemic in minors has not picked up, in general it is going down“said López-Gatell.

The undersecretary indicated that the essential strategy has been vaccination, of which Mexico has applied more than 92 million doses in total.

Assured that the Government applies on average more than 500,000 daily doses and that this week alone, more than 5.6 million doses will arrive.

“We are still on the right track to ensure that on October 31 the entire adult population is vaccinated with at least one dose,” said López-Gatell.
