They rule out a rise in cases due to the return to classrooms

It is not shown that there is an increase in cases of Covid-19 in minors despite the fact that it has been two weeks since the schools were opened, emphasized the undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell.

The official pointed out that less than 10% of the cases that are registered are in minors and more than 95% of the cases in general are mild: “Of course we will continue to monitor and we will be aware of any eventuality.”

According to data from National System for the Comprehensive Protection of Girls, Boys and Adolescents (Sipinna), from April 2020 to September 12, 2021 there is a cumulative 72 thousand 018 infected minors and 702 deaths from the virus.

The month of August 2021 was when more infections were registered with 9,431: 5,446 in children from 12 to 17 years old, 2,280 from 6 to 11 years old and 1,170 from 0 to 5 years old.

A month before, 4,928 cases were registered: 2,912 from 12 to 17 years old, 1,212 from 6 to 11 years old, and 804 from 0 to 5 years old.

Until September 12, 3,676 infections have been registered: 2 thousand 43 in minors between 12 and 17 years old, 943 between 6 and 11 years old and 690 in the group between 0 and 5 years old.

Vaccines, to minors at risk

The same way, López-Gatell specified that children who suffer from a disease that increases the risk of contracting Covid-19 they will be vaccinated.

He added that inoculation is visualized in two groups: those who do not have diseases that cause them a serious risk from the virus and those who suffer from certain diseases that increase the risk of Covid grave.

He explained that these diseases are: cancer, diabetes, immunosuppression, VIH and kidney failure.

He specified that in Mexico just under a million children have these health conditions.

However, he reiterated that World Health Organization (WHO) and other international health organizations have not recommended the generalized inoculation of healthy children and adolescents. He also highlighted that Pfizer’s vaccine is the only one authorized for use in minors.

Last week, López-Gatell declared that giving the vaccine to a child is taking a dose from an adult who is at serious risk of suffering from the disease.
