Odol & Colgate fail: mouthwashes tested by Stiftung Warentest

Branded waters from Odol or Colgate only received the grade “poor” in the test by Stiftung Warentest – some cheap mouthwashes can score for that. We have summarized the most important results for you. In the video you can see what dental care chewing gum really does.

Inexpensive rinses better: For the 02/2021 issue, Stiftung Warentest tested a total of 20 different mouthwashes. Of these, 13 products are ready-to-use solutions and seven are mouthwashes to be diluted. Mouthwash solutions from discounters and supermarkets such as Edeka, Lidl, Rossmann and Kaufland achieved the grade “good” (1.6) and thus shared the best grade in the Test by Stiftung Warentest. With regular use, eight of the 13 products prevent tooth decay, gingivitis and plaque. This means that the cheapest mouthwashes in the test are also the best. However, two branded products – the Paradontax solutions and the Listerine Cool Mint – only received the grade “sufficient”, while the solution from Dr. Hauschka fails with the grade “inadequate”.

However, the situation is different with mouthwashes. Here, none of the tested products got more than the grade “sufficient”, six out of seven waters only received the grade “poor”. This also includes the products of the dental care brands Colgate and Odol, but also the inexpensive dm own brand dontodent.

Mouthwash vs Mouthwash: What’s the Difference?

The “solution” is a term from chemistry and describes a mixture of two similar substances. In our case, this means: The mouthwash solutions are already mixed and do not need to be diluted; with a mouthwash, however, you must add additional water.

Many mouthwashes also do not contain fluoride, which has been shown to strengthen teeth and help with care. Because: Due to the EU cosmetics regulation, the concentration of fluoride in the bottles must not be too high. However, since mouthwashes would have to be diluted, the fluoride limit would be exceeded. Other ingredients that prevent gum inflammation and plaque, for example, are also missing in many mouthwashes. However, the important ingredients are contained in the mouthwash solutions.
