Here are the cars that will compete for the 2023 Car of the Year award

From 45 to 7: the Car of the Year jury has taken its first look at the models that will compete for the 2023 edition of the prize. The seven vehicles still in the running are the Jeep Avenger, Kia Niro, Nissan Ariya, Peugeot 408, Renault Austral, Subaru Solterra, Toyota bZ4X and Volkswagen ID. The Alfa Romeo Tonale was therefore not selected, just like the other Ferrari 296 GTB and Ferrari Purosange.

The award ceremony will take place on January 13, 2023, not at the Geneva Motor Show, as tradition dictates, but on the opening day of the Brussels Motor Show. The place therefore changes, but not the rules of the game. The car of the year 2023 will indeed be chosen by a jury made up of 61 journalists from all over Europe, who will be called upon to give a vote to each of the seven models remaining in competition.

Immediately in the race

Thus, if the Tonale is already out of the race, Stellantis remains in the race with two models: the Peugeot 408 and the Jeep Avenger. The small electric SUV (except in Italy and Spain, where it will also be gasoline-powered) reaches the final a few months after its debut, a sign of the popularity of the project with the specialized press.

Four other finalists are also electric: the Nissan Ariya, the Subaru Solterra and its “cousin” Toyota bZ4X and the Volkswagen ID.Buzz. And if the latter were to win, it would represent a first for the car of the year: never in the history of the award, has a van won. It is, however, easier, at least looking at the stats, for an SUV/crossover to win, as four of the seven finalists have a raised finish.

To come back to the motorization, compared to 2022, when no less than six of the finalists were native electrics, for 2023 the thermal can still have its say. Although in all cases there are different levels of electrification. From the Kia Niro, the only one in the group (apart from the Avenger) available in thermal and 100 electric versions, to the Renault Austral (available in mild hybrid and full hybrid versions) and the Peugeot 408, powered either by the 1.2 turbo petrol, or by a plug-in motorization.
