Surprise return to the fore: overview of the Nordiques issue

To almost everyone’s surprise, the Nordiques issue is back in the news.

In our pages yesterday, former Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos, launched flowers in the Old Capital, even mentioning being ready to be part of the shareholders of the team if the opportunity arose. “There are a lot of people who are interested in a team in Quebec”, commented the Minister of Finance, Eric Girard, yesterday. In the morning, the Quebecor group, a leading player in the return of the Nordiques, said it was always ready to invest in a team.

“Quebecor is part of the solution,” said the minister while reiterating that his government is in favor of the project.

“When I go to meet the NHL [en janvier], I want to explain how Quebec has changed. The economy is strong, public spending is strong and our credit rating is better than Ontario, ”added Mr. Girard enthusiastically.

Other markets

The fact remains that Quebec is not the only interested market, and the price of an expansion has drastically exploded since the Old Capital became part of the process in 2016. Here is a portrait of the current situation in the Bettman circuit.

THE ONLY OPTION: EXPANSION?

The NHL recently added two rosters through the expansion: the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017-18 and the Seattle Kraken who are currently playing their first NHL season. If Quebec wishes to obtain an expansion, it will have to hope that the NHL is open to launching a new process which, logically, would allow two new concessions to enter the NHL. This is also the only possible option for Quebec, according to Peter Karmanos. “We do not have any plan for further expansions at the moment,” however, confirmed NHL Assistant Commissioner Bill Daly at the Journal.

THE PRICE ?

In the hypothetical scenario where the NHL decides to embark on a third expansion process, it will be necessary to see what the price charged by Gary Bettman and the Board of Governors will be. Recall that Las Vegas paid US $ 500 million to get its team while, four years later, the price had risen to US $ 650 million for the Seattle Kraken. In Canadian dollars, we are talking about more than $ 825 million.

VIABLE FOR QUEBEC?

Roughly speaking, if Quebec wants to get the Nordiques back, the owner (s) will have to be ready to invest an amount close to a billion dollars.

“To spend a billion dollars and hope to have a return on the investment, you have to generate a lot of income,” argues the professor in the Department of Economics of the University of Quebec in Montreal Philip Merrigan. The sinews of war in terms of income in all sports are luxury lodges. This is what will differentiate the average dealerships and those that make a lot of income. Luxury lodges are associated with large offices and head offices. There are very few in Quebec. Would we be able to rent a hundred lodges at $ 150,000 or $ 200,000 per year? He wonders.
