The suicide It is the tenth cause of death in Cuba, and the third among those under 18 years of age, reported today the Ministry of Public Health, regarding the World Suicide Prevention Day, which is celebrated on September 10.
According to official data from Cuban health authorities, there is a higher prevalence of suicide in men, while attempts are more frequent in women.
The age group with the highest suicide mortality rate in Cuba is the one from 20 to 59, and the provinces with the highest rates are Las Tunas, Holguín, Villa Clara and Sancti Spíritus.
Suicide deaths in Cuba increased in 2020, with 81 more incidents than those registered the previous year. According to data from Statistical Yearbook of Health 2021, prepared by the Ministry of Public Health, 1,548 Cubans committed suicide on the island, for an average rate of 13 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
As has happened in previous years, the data show that young people are the most vulnerable population group, since suicide is among the main causes of death in two fundamental age groups: from 5 to 18 years old and from 10 to 19 years old.
In the first, the number of suicides was 23, while in the second it was 32. Suicide in these groups is only surpassed by accidents, malignant tumors and congenital malformations in the group from 5 to 18, and accidents and malignant tumors in the 10 to 19.
Suicide is also one of the leading causes of death among young people in Latin America, and Cuba is one of the countries with the highest index with respect to its population.
“Suicide is worrying, in both sexes, with higher increases in Argentina, Cuba, Honduras, Peru, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic,” says a report from the Pan American Health Organization.
