Wimbledon 2022 prepares to shine again from next Monday, June 27, date on which the main draw of the third Grand Slam of the year will begin to be played. Yes indeed, the current edition of the English tournament will be marked by several controversies that were generated during the last time and their development will not be the usual compared to previous years.
The debate was generated in the first instance after the organization of the championship decided to exclude Russian and Belarusian tennis players, product of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As a consequence, players like Daniil Medvedev (1st in the ATP ranking) Y Andrey Rublev (8th)both born in the first country mentioned above, will not be able to travel and will join the list of figures that will be absent in London.
Why won’t points be awarded at Wimbledon 2022?
The prohibition of the participation of Russian tennis players in Wimbledon 2022 caused the Association of Professional Tennis Players (ATP) to decide to eliminate the points of the ranking during the English Grand Slam.
“The ability for players of any nationality to enter tournaments based on merit, and without discrimination, is fundamental to our Tour.. Wimbledon’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players from competing in the UK undermines this principle and the integrity of the ATP ranking system. It is also inconsistent with our Rankings agreement. Short of a change in circumstances, it is with great regret and reluctance that We see no other option but to remove the points from the Wimbledon ATP Rankings for 2022“, announced the ATP.
Given this, one of the tennis players who criticized the measure was Novak Djokovic (3rd)who indicated that the ATP could have acted differently and reached a midpoint so as not to lose all the points that the competition gave.
“It’s all quite unfair, I have personally lost 4000 points this year for political decisions. So for me or for the tennis players who did well last year, not only are we not going to have a chance to win points, but we can’t defend them. It is a very singular and strange situation, I must say”, confessed the Serbian.
How many points did Wimbledon distribute?
Wimbledon, like every Grand Slam, gave 2,000 points to the champion1,200 to the finalist, 720 to the semifinalists, 360 to those who reach the quarterfinals, 180 to the round of 16, 90 in the third round, 45 in the second and 10 in the first.
