Bad news from Spain for Samuel Eto’o. The former forward of Inter, Barcelona and Sampdoria was sentenced to 22 months in prison for tax evasion. The 3.8 million euros hidden from the Spanish tax authorities between 2006 and 2009, during his experience with the Blaugrana shirt, proved fatal for the Cameroonian. In the course of his declaration to the Barcelona Court, Eto’o admitted the fraud and accused – without mentioning him directly – his agent José Maria Mesalles: “I recognize the facts and I will pay, but I let you know that I was a child at the time and that I always did what my father asked me to do”, in reference to his attorney whom he considered a second dad.
Eto’o will not physically end up in prison, but will have to pay four fines for a total of 5.6 million euros. His agent, on the other hand, about 900 thousand euros. The judgments of the Court, whose execution will be suspended as neither of them has a criminal record, have been lightened following the admission of guilt and the restitution of part of the cheated fees. Even off the pitch, once his professional career is over, Eto’o continues to be talked about.
