World Cup Saquarema Stage – Real-time results

After two years without happening because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Saquarema stage is back on the World Surfing Championship calendar. The competition started this Thursday and here at Olímpiad Todo Dia you can follow all the results of the competition in real time.

“It’s great to be back in Brazil after a long break of two years”said the CEO of the World Surf League, Erik Loganreferring to the event not being held in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic. “Nobody imagined at the beginning of 2020 that we wouldn’t be in this paradise place. I want to thank the entire community of Saquarema, the State of Rio de Janeiro, for the usual support and especially to the wonderful Brazilian fans. For our surfers it is one of the most important stages of the season and we are so grateful to be here again. We are looking forward to the very good wave forecast and thank you to everyone from Brazil”.

+Brasil will have 12 surfers in the Saquarema stage of the WSL

We are very happy for what lies ahead in the coming days.”said Ivan MartinGeneral Manager of WSL Latin America. “The forecast is great, the structure is the largest ever, there are more than 3,100 m2 of built area and this would not have happened if we didn’t have a series of partners that I would like to thank. Especially the mayor of Saquarema, Manoela Peres, and all her team, who always welcome us so well here. Saquarema is the only city in the world that will host the three main WSL events, the Championship Tour, the Challenger Series and the QS 5000. So welcome everyone and thank you once again for the prestige.”.

Among the surfers, the first to speak was the place of Saquarema, João Chianca. pellet he was part of the CT this year, until the elite cut in the middle of the season, but he is the guest of the Saquarema stage of the World Surfing Championship to compete at home. He answered about being at a CT Press Conference and at the Leo Neves Surf Training Center, the two-time Brazilian champion and former top of the elite, who ended up passing away while competing in a local event at Praia de Itaúna.

“I think Leo (Neves) would be proud of me here. He taught me a lot, but his legacy was left in an incredible way and I hope to continue this story, encouraging new talents from Saquarema and Brazil.”said João Chiancawho is selected in the first heat of the Saquarema stage of the World Surfing Championship, along with the Olympic champion Italo Ferreira. “Since I was a child, I used to stay on the beach watching the QS that happened here and always dreaming of competing. Now, I have that opportunity, but I think I’m just a result of the work of these guys here by my side (Italo and Gabriel Medina). There are a lot of beautiful things happening, which is even difficult to talk about”.

The 2019 world champion and first Olympic surfing gold medalist, Italo Ferreira, was by his side at the conference table and talked about this great moment of Brazilian surfing on the international scene. Last year, for the first time in the history of the wave sport, Brazil dominated the top of the world ranking, with Gabriel Medina winning his third title, Filipe Toledo being runner-up and Italo Ferreira taking third place.

“We’ve been dedicating ourselves a lot, everyone gives 100%, dedicates themselves every day, we’ve been well connected in the last few months and it’s been a lot of fun”said Italian. “There was also Lead (João Chianca) who destroyed it and should come back very strong next year. It’s amazing to be part of this story, to be able to change this scenario. Especially after the Olympics, the sport in general won with my achievement, we are growing, evolving and bringing new people to surfing, of all ages, which is very positive”.

The world runner-up Tatiana Weston-Webb commented on returning to compete in front of the vibrant crowd of Brazil, which has always filled Saquarema since the Brazilian stage of the World Surfing Championship arrived in the National Capital of Surfing in 2017. “The Brazilian fans are the best in the world and I want to use that energy to do my best. I’m very excited to be here in Brazil, here in Saquarema. I really love this wave, it’s amazing, I really enjoy surfing lefts and I want to have a lot of fun, without pressure.”.

The three-time world champion Gabriel Medina did not compete in the first half of the season and only returned in the sixth leg of the World Surf League Championship Tour. In the two he participated, he went to the semifinals, showing he was in full physical and technical shape to seek a place among the top-5 of the ranking, which will dispute the world title in Rip Curl WSL Finals. For that, he needs victories in the last three events of the year, in Brazil, South Africa and Tahiti.

“I’m happy to be back competing, I’ve already made two semifinals and I’ve only been worried about surfing, enjoying my time in the water, because I was out of rhythm. I spent a lot of time at home, taking care of myself and my strategy is to go to the water, surf, do my best.”said Gabriel Medina. “I’ve been doing different things, spending a lot of time together with Italo (Ferreira), with Filipe (Toledo), with the entire Brazilian team. It’s been a lot of fun so it’s been worth every second of the tour. It was great to come back and be so well received by everyone.”.
