A statue of Sergio Aguero has stood in front of Manchester City’s stadium since Friday. But some are not quite sure.
Twice Sergio Aguero in front of ManCity’s stadium – once of steel, once of flesh and blood.
Sergio Aguero has received the promised statue: On Friday night, Manchester City unveiled the galvanized steel work, which shows the long-time attacker and record scorer of the reigning English champions celebrating what is probably his most famous goal. Ten years ago, Aguero gave Man City their first Premier League title in dramatic fashion.
“That was the best moment of my life,” said the Argentinian who was present, who switched to FC Barcelona in the summer of 2021 but had to end his career in December at the age of 33 due to heart problems. “That moment changed my life, the club, everything.”
However, not everyone recognized Aguero in the artwork. “It’s funny that they asked Aguero to unveil a statue of Toni Kroos,” tweeted one – a “running gag” was quickly underway. In the evening, Kroos himself responded to a tweet that included a picture of the statue and the comment “Sergio is here” by asking: “Are you sure?”
