Daniel Ferreira do Nascimento from São Paulo won the Rio Half Marathon this Saturday morning (18), with a time of 1h01min03s – the second best in history in Brazil and the fourth in South America. The Brazilian and South American records continue with Marilson Gomes dos Santos, who has the mark of 59.33, obtained in 2007, in the city of Údine, Italy.

Summoned to represent Brazil in the marathon of the Oregon World Championships in Athletics, which will be held from July 15 to 24, in the United States, Danielzinho, as he is known in the sport, confirmed the good phase with another great result. He is the Brazilian and South American record holder of the 42.195 km, with 2:04:51, time obtained on April 17, in Seoul, South Korea. With that mark, the Brazilian is the first non-African on the World Athletics all-time list.

Born on July 28, 1998, in the city of Paraguaçu Paulista, Daniel Nascimento lives and trains in Kaptagat, a city at an altitude of 2,800 m, in Kenya. “I wanted to do faster races at lower altitudes as a test for the marathon at the Worlds. I was already surpassing my best mark in the half marathon, but within the marathon. Last time I passed 1:02. So I also wanted to run a half marathon by myself and lower my best time of 1:04:27 and I did it,” said Daniel.

“We chose to do two weeks of fast cycling, which is good for those who are already at altitude for a long time”, commented Jorge Luiz da Silva, the athlete’s coach.

Next steps

After the Rio Half Marathon, Daniel turns his attention to the track. He will be one of the attractions of the XLI Troféu Brasil Interclubes de Atletismo. The competition will be played from June 22 to 25, at the Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium, in Rio de Janeiro. The 10,000m final is scheduled for 5:50 pm on Friday, June 24th. Danielzinho is a guest of the Brazilian Athletics Confederation (the results count, but no points in the dispute between clubs).
