The 26-year-old suffered the serious injury last Saturday in Hessen’s final training session before the game at TuS N-L├╝bbecke.

An MRI examination on Monday provided the sobering diagnosis. Kastening, who was nominated by national coach Alfred Gislason for the World Cup play-off games against Faroe Islands next week, will be out for several months. “Of course that’s particularly hard. But I tell myself that injuries can happen, that’s the occupational risk for us professional athletes,” said the left-hander.

In the next week, Kastening will undergo an operation in Berlin, followed by a long rehabilitation. “It may sound a bit strange at the moment, but I’m actually looking forward to this challenge,” said the international.
