Nicolas Höfler will remain with SC Freiburg. According to board member Jochen Saier, the midfielder, who played for SC as a youth, symbolizes the Freiburg way.
Nicolas Höfler remains loyal to his youth club.
Nicolas Höfler has been with SC Freiburg for more than 17 years, with a two-year break due to a loan spell in Aue. The now 32-year-old has now extended his contract again. As usual, the sports club did not provide any information about the length of the contract. “Chicco has been a central component of our team in the truest sense of the word for many years,” CEO Jochen Saier is quoted as saying in the press release.
Active for the first team since 2013
Because of his mentality and last but not least because of his career, the “anchor and pacesetter” symbolizes the “Freiburg way”. At the age of 15, Höfler moved from SC Pfullendorf to Freiburg and went through the youth teams. After three seasons as a second-half, the midfielder gained match practice on a two-year loan to Erzgebirge Aue in the Bundesliga lower house. After returning to Breisgau in 2013, Höfler was part of the SC first team.
The two-time U-18 international has made 280 appearances for the Freiburg first team and has scored twelve goals. Höfler was therefore instrumental in the further development of SC into “a real player in the Bundesliga”, as he calls his club himself. “I feel so good that the only option I had was to extend it,” said Höfler.
“Best squad” since Höfler has been in Freiburg
He would like to continue to help shape the path he has taken and called the current squad “best” since he has been in Breisgau. “What we have in terms of quality at the top and in the width, I’ve never had that at the SC,” explained the six and then explained how he determines this: “If things don’t go quite so well – how we do it an individual action can create a chance to score, that helps us enormously.”
