Certainly Alpine has packaged a good weekend in Canada, despite the revisable strategy implemented with Alonso, a tactic that probably prevented the Spaniard from reaping what he deserved after the extraordinary front row on Saturday. With Esteban Ocon sixth at the checkered flag and the Spaniard relegated from the commissioners from seventh to ninth, the Enstone team still took home good points, proving to be even faster than Mercedes in the early stages of the race.
Nonetheless, team principal Otmar Szafnauer cooled the enthusiasm, explaining how the target of the Anglo-French team is fourth place and therefore McLaren and not Mercedes, currently still too fast.
In Canada we took home good points, without safety maybe we could have done even more, but these are not things that can be foreseen. – the words of Szafnauer – The pace of our car in the wet was really good, in the dry we knew we couldn’t compete with Ferrari and Red Bull but we thought we were as fast as Mercedes. Unfortunately they got ahead of us for several episodes, but it must be said that in absolute terms we know that we will not beat them in the championship, we will not finish third. We have to be realistic, we are fighting for fourth place with McLaren and therefore I am satisfied with the points in Montreal. We are at least two tenths a lap from Mercedes, let’s see how it goes at Silverstone, it would be nice to play it again with them there ”.
