AOn the occasion of the commemoration of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the USA, President Joe Biden described national unity as the greatest strength of the United States. In the days after the attacks, heroic action, resilience and “a true sense of national unity” were demonstrated, Biden said in a video message released on Friday evening. “In the struggle for the soul of America, unity is our greatest strength. Unity doesn’t mean we have to believe in the same thing. We have to have a basic respect and trust, ”said Biden.
The president wants to visit the three crime scenes on Saturday, the 20th anniversary of the attacks with around 3,000 dead. Biden first wanted to visit Ground Zero in New York, then the crash site of the fourth hijacked plane near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and finally the Pentagon near Washington. He will not give a speech, but visit the places to show the victims his respect, it said.
Dark forces of human nature
The attacks motivated a generation to serve the country and also protect it against terrorism, Biden said. Anyone who wants to harm the United States should know the following: “We will hunt you, catch you and hold you accountable.” This applies today, tomorrow and forever, he emphasized.
Biden criticized that after the attacks “the darker forces of human nature” also emerged, namely “fear and anger”. For example, there was prejudice and violence against American Muslims, against “true and devout followers of a peaceful religion,” said Biden. But the country must not allow itself to be divided. “Unity is what defines us – America at its best.”
