The hype of “Round 6” gave Netflix incredible numbers
You were probably attracted to the obsession with Round 6. The South Korean survival drama has been one of the most talked about in the Netflix, and now, is the biggest debut for any series on the streaming platform. According to ET, Round 6 surpassed Bridgerton, Lupin, The Witcher and the third season of Stranger Things as the most watched series on Netflix with 111 million viewers.
Round 6 debuted in September and immediately became an international hit. It won first place in 90 countries on Netflix 10 days after its release. Show creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently revealed that he had the idea for the show and was rejected by studios for over 10 years. Until 2019, Netflix approached him to bring the series to its platform.
Round 6 follows the story of a group of people in deep debt who are asked to play a children’s game with a deadly twist for a huge cash prize. Dong-hyuk explained that the last decade of news and politics directly inspired the show, including the Donald Trump era.
“Over the last 10 years, there have been a lot of problems,” he explained to IndieWire, citing the cryptocurrency boom and the effects of social media on society.
“And then Donald Trump became the president of the United States and I think he looks like one of the Round 6 VIPs. It’s almost like he’s running a game show, not a country, giving people horror. After all these questions happened, I thought it was time for this show to spread around the world.”, he completed.
