NAfter the removal of a tumor from the intestine, the Brazilian soccer legend Pelé is on the mend. “He’s not in pain and he’s in a good mood,” wrote his daughter Kely do Nascimento on Instagram on Monday evening (local time). “He’s a little pissed off that he can only eat jelly, but he can take it.”

In the next few days he will first be transferred from the intensive care unit to a normal room and then released, his daughter wrote next to a photo that apparently shows the two of them on a video call. Just over a week ago, the 80-year-old had a tumor removed from his colon that doctors had previously discovered during a routine examination in a clinic in São Paulo. After that, he initially stayed in the intensive care unit.

Pelé’s health has been a recurring concern over the past few years. He underwent several hip operations. He also had problems with his spine and knee. Two years ago he had a kidney stone removed after a urinary tract infection. Pelé played 92 international matches and won three world titles (1958, 1962, 1970) with the Seleção.
