Robert Andrich played a decisive role in Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s important win against Celtic Glasgow. Afterwards, he and his coach explained why he is so important for the Werkself at the moment and what is also special for the midfielder.
Robert Andrich had plenty of reason to be happy after the 3-2 win over Celtic Glasgow.
Bayer Leverkusen faced their first defeat in the group stage on matchday five of the Europa League. The Werkself were down 2-1 against Celtic Glasgow right up until the end of the season. But then Robert Andrich came six and equaled – a decisive turn in the late 3-2 success.
That should have been my first double as a professional.
Leverkusen had led early, Andrich himself had already headed in to make it 1-0. With enormous assertiveness after a corner from Florian Wirtz. “That should have been my first double as a professional,” said the summer newcomer from Union Berlin happily at the press conference. He was “really happy” that he played such a decisive role in the early knockout stage.
But against the Scottish guests there was by far not all positive things to see on the field. Andrich and Co. had “not seen” the interim 1: 2 deficit in the second half – mind you after two shots on goal by Celtic, favored by two unfortunate actions on the defensive Leverkusen. In the end, however, the Werkself had “deservedly rewarded” themselves, according to the double packer, as they regained control in the closing stages and had increased their chances.
Seoane’s high praise: “What he does has hand and foot”
Working is certainly an attribute that applies to Andrich. But in the past few weeks he has repeatedly proven that he can do a lot more. After initial difficulties that the 27-year-old had experienced after his move, he is getting better and better. He not only embodies the aggressive leader, but also scores more and more goals – which makes him “even more happy”.
Coach Gerardo Seoane sang a song of praise who, in addition to the “certain robustness and tackling strength in midfield”, also emphasized Andrich’s “game intelligence and technique”. Or better said: “Everything he does has a hand and foot.”
It would be no wonder that Andrich needed some time to get used to. But: The Werkself number 8 has “become more and more important in recent weeks due to the failures” and has “taken the opportunity extremely” and taken on responsibility. The bite and the special mentality of Andrich now also have an effect on the mandatory degrees, added Seoane.
The fans saw it the same way after the game. Andrich was cheered loudly after the final whistle. He himself said: “I think it’s not every day that you stand in front of the curve and your name is called. It’s very nice for the soul. Especially on such a nice evening with the 3-2 victory” – equivalent to winning the group. Thanks to this, Leverkusen is sure to be in the second round of the Europa League.
