War in Ukraine: kyiv should have German howitzers

kyiv announced on Tuesday the arrival of German Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled guns in its arsenal, after weeks of negotiations between Ukraine and its Western allies to receive “powerful weapons” capable of repelling Russian attacks in the Donbass.

“The Panzerhaubitze 2000 are finally part of the arsenal of 155 mm howitzers of the Ukrainian artillery”welcomed Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksi├» Reznikov on Twitter, who said “appreciate the effortsfrom Berlin to help kyiv militarily. “Our gunners will heat up the battlefield”enthused Mr. Reznikov in a tweet accompanied by a photo of two of these systems in action.

Germany announced in early May that it would supply seven of these armored howitzers to Ukraine to help counter the Russian army, without specifying at that time when the deliveries would take place. Berlin did not immediately confirm the delivery of the Panzerhaubitze 2000, nor their current number.

The Panzerhaubitze 2000 (Armored Howitzer Model 2000) is a self-propelled gun manufactured by the industrialist Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). The devices intended for Ukraine come from the maintenance stocks of the Bundeswehr, the German army, Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said in early May. Ukrainian soldiers were to be trained in their use in Germany from mid-May.
