The Flame of the Nation in Château-Gontier in tribute to General Leclerc hero of the Liberation

As part of the 82e anniversary of the first stage in Haut-Anjou of the general Philippe Leclerc de Hautecloquewho decided to join Free France, after the Appeal of General de Gaulle on June 18, 1940and who participated in the Liberation of Chateau-Gontier (Mayenne) with the second armored division, a memorial ceremony is organized, the Thursday, June 23, 2022.

The tribute ceremony General Leclerc will take place Thursday, June 23, 2022 from 3.45 p.m. on the Quai d’Alsace, in the presence of the authorities, members of the Association du Souvenir du Général Leclerc, and councilors and former municipal councilors for children from Chateau-Gontier, Shaded-d’Anjou and Grugé-l’Hopital (Maine-et-Loire)who went to collect the Flame of the Nation at Paristhe day before, to bring it back to Château-Gontier.

Lectures by historians

Just before 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Espace Saint-Fiacre in Château-Gontier, several conferences open to all, and free, will take place. Christopher Legrand2e vice-president of the House of Elders of the 2e DB will intervene on the 2nd Armored Division and General Leclerc.

Then it will be the turn of Christine Levisse-Touzéhistorian, president of the scientific councils of the Order of the Liberation and of the General Remembrance Association Leclerc of Grugé-l’Hôpital to speak on the Liberation of Château-Gontier from August 6–8, 1944by the Americans then the crossing of the city by the 2e DB.

To finish, Alain Viotadministrator at the Mayenne Deportees Memorial will present the Flame, the duties of remembrance and vigilance, all of this enriched with short video extracts and photos.

Historic military vehicles will be parked on the Esplanade Saint-Fiacre in Château-Gontier, allowing the public to see them and talk to the owners, memory smugglers.
