Russia will have to face new EU sanctions

The European Union (EU) will continue to be involved in the war in Ukraine in multiple formats. The foreign ministers of the EU member states agreed to set new sanctions against Russia. The foreign ministers also promised to continue delivering weapons to the kyiv government.

The head of community diplomacy, Josep Borrell, stated that the restrictions on Russia will be applied as early as possible. The measures seek affect new sectors of the Russian economy, including technology. The meeting of the European ministers took place in the middle of the United Nations assembly.

The foreign ministers met in an emergency after the announcement that Russia was calling up 300,000 reservists for the war. Borrell said after the meeting that “it is clear that (Vladimir) Putin is trying to destroy Ukraine”. The EU diplomatic official added that “it is trying to destroy the whole country by different means.”

Josep Borrell commented that the Kremlin tries to affect support for the Ukrainians. For the same reason, he expressed that “This is not going to break our unity to support Ukraine”. The Spaniard commented that they will maintain “support for Ukraine’s ability to defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty for as long as it takes.”

Reuters indicates that the agreement to add new sanctions was finalized at the meeting, but that later it remains to specify them and make them effective. European ministers also rejected plans to organize plebiscites for annexation to Russia in breakaway areas. The regions of Donetsk and Lugansk expect to vote this 23 and 27 the consultations.
