Volotea is continuing its development at Saint-Exupéry airport in Lyon. The Spanish low-cost airline presented its ambitions for 2023 on Thursday, November 24. Rise in ticket prices, new destinations, addition of a second Airbus plane… We tell you everything.
An increase of 3 to 5 euros
Volotea launched its first lines from Lyon in 2018, before setting up its base in 2021. Three years during which the Spanish company went from 9 to 21 destinations.
In 2022, Easy Jet’s competitors are a hit, carrying more than 400,000 passengers, including 180,000 between July and August (+ 229% compared to 2019). The very low prices of their tickets to reach European capitals and the islands contribute to the crazy growth of Volotea.
Prices that will rise in 2023 to try to offset the rise in fuel. “We have already increased the ticket price by 10% in 2022. There will be a further increase in 2023 but we will continue to stay low. These will be increases of 3 to 5 euros”, announced Céline Lacroix, in charge of international development at Volotea, Thursday, November 24.
A new Airbus A320
Volotea continues to improve its offer in Lyon where it will base a second Airbus A320 aircraft in 2023. It will then offer 32 destinations, 35% of them to islands such as the Balearic Islands, Sardinia, Corsica…
The arrival of this second plane will create 30 jobs directly in Lyon, bringing the number of employees on the site to 70. Besides, the recruitment campaign has already started.
New lines under study
Through these investments, the Spanish company hopes to double the number of passengers transported, thus increasing to 800,000 in 2023. It will transport them to SetifMilan-Bergamo, MadridPrague, Athens, Menorca or Malaga.
Céline Lacroix confided that discussions are underway with Lyon airport to launch other international destinations in 2023. Volotea does not hide its interest in the German market. A direct line between Lyon and Berlin ? It is a studied track…
