All Marvel movies and TV shows are expected to have big action sets and a barn ending. However, as She-Hulk meta ending pointed out, not everything has to be big and elaborate. This seems to be true of Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Specialas James Gunn revealed the special originally had a villain who ended up fighting Kevin Baconbut ultimately, the writer/director changed his mind.
All Marvel movies involve a big final act, and so have most MCU TV shows on Disney+. In the end, who doesn’t love a huge, dramatic ending? However, for the Guardians Holiday SpecialGunn realized that wasn’t as interesting as doing the characters’ story without an imposed threat being imposed. He told Variety:
“Before I wrote the screenplay, I wrote a treatment, and in the treatment there was this other threat. I just realized that I wasn’t interested in that other thing. There was an action sequence at the end where Kevin Bacon was jumping around and doing some action stunts, which would have been pretty cool, but I wasn’t interested in the threat at all. What interested me was the interaction between the characters. So I just cut that out and made it into a story about people.
How does Kevin Bacon get his start in the MCU?
Many actors have instantly made iconic impressions of the MCU over the past 14 years. As for Kevin Bacon, he plays himself, which brings a whole new level to his arrival. For the actor, it was a joy to be able to do something fun and he certainly seemed as excited as anyone. He recently said:
“Look, I love doing this stuff. For me, movies are this giant playground. I can play and a grown man can just have fun and have fun. I take the job very seriously, but in the case of something like ‘Guardians’, sometimes you have to stop and say ‘Oh shit, that’s really cool!’ I had a really, really fun concert.
Kevin Bacon plays an unexpected central role in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, as he becomes the subject of Mantis and Drax’s mission to cheer up their depressed leader Star Lord during the holiday season. While the special is clearly not one of the most serious entries in the MCU, it does act as something of a coda for Phase 4 of the Marvel narrative, as it follows the Guardians from their brief appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder and close the gap with their third film next summer.
The Holiday special arrives on Disney+ this Friday, November 25.
