A mass of cold air of polar origin caused a marked decrease in thermal marks that, during the week, will affect the entire country, with minimum values between -10 and 2 degrees, in Patagonia, with specific sectors in the west where the maximum will not exceed zero degrees; and between -1 and 6 in the central region and between 2 and 8 in northern Argentina, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported on Monday.
Tomorrow at 6:14 a.m. the June solstice will be recorded, which will start “the astronomical winter” and that “this year coincides with the beginning of the calendar winter,” according to the SMN, which warned that it will then be “the day with the longest night “.
According to a report issued by the agency, the beginning of winter will stand out for presenting “very low thermal values, especially in southern Argentina” as a result of the entry of a cold air front of polar origin, conditions that will continue at least “until weekend”.
In Patagonia, on average the minimum daily temperatures will range between -10 and -2 with maximums ranging between -4 and 6 in the afternoon, while in the west of this region the values will be even lower since ” some days this week may not go above 0 degrees.”
In addition to the mass of cold air, the “presence of a low pressure system over the Pacific Ocean” will bring moisture to that sector of the country, favoring the possibility of snowfall during the week.
According to the SMN report, “at least until Friday, June 24 inclusive, the snowfalls will occur in a broader area, recurrently and more intensely,” as well as “affecting the mountain range and the plateau of northern Chubut, Rio Negro and Neuquen.
The Mendoza and San Juan mountain ranges will also record snowfall according to the agency and it specified that it is likely that, by the end of the week, some of the aforementioned areas will accumulate between 20 and 50 centimeters of snow.
Meanwhile, the cold air front will advance towards the center of the country between Tuesday and Wednesday with minimum marks that will be around -1 and 6 degrees and maximum that will be between 9 and 15 degrees.
In La Pampa, the minimum temperature forecast for Wednesday is -1 and zero degrees for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with a maximum between 10 and 13.
Between Ríos, Santa Fe, Córdoba and the city of Buenos Aires will have average minimum values that will be between 5 and 8 degrees and maximum between 13 and 16 at least until next Saturday.
The advance of the cold front is expected to reach the north of the country on Wednesday night, causing a decrease in thermal marks from next Thursday, with morning temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees, and maximums that will range between 13 and 18, in this region, the “cold event” will be shorter than in the rest of the country, the organization specified.
