At least eight people are murdered and five are injured in a bar in Celaya, Guanajuato

A shooting attack in a bar in the municipality of Celaya, in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, left eight people dead and five injured, authorities reported.

“The events were recorded after a report was received about detonations of a firearm inside a clandestine bar,” the municipal government reported in a statement.

The massacre occurred in the community of San José el Nuevo, located 13 kilometers from the municipal seat.

According to the first versions, armed subjects aboard vehicles and motorcycles arrived at the aforementioned bar and shot at those present there.

Eight people died at the scene, while another five were injured and had to be hospitalized.

Casings of long weapons were found at the scene, according to authorities.

Personnel from the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), the National Guard and the State Public Security Forces (FSPE) carried out an operation to try to find those responsible.

Guanajuato, located in central Mexico, is the state that has concentrated the highest number of intentional homicides since 2018.

Only in the first semester of the year accumulates 1,566 people murdered.

In addition, just before dawn on Wednesday, in San Luis de la Paz, another municipality in Guanajuato, the journalist Ernesto Méndez Pérez was also assassinated inside a bar.

The fact reflects the wave of violence in Mexico, which registered 33,315 homicides in 2021 after the two most violent years in its history, under the mandate of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, with 34,690 murder victims in 2019 and 34,554 in 2020.
