Kia EV6: Strom per Sturztrunk

The EV6 is Kia’s first electric vehicle of a new era. So no converted combustion engine, but based on a special electric platform. The crossover does a lot in particular. The high-performance 800-volt battery system, for example, which enables recharging in the blink of an eye – current collection with a fall drink, if you will. The power spectrum ranges from 170 to 585 hp. And the range king in the range can cover a distance of 528 kilometers with one battery charge.

The electric age is not just around the corner. It is already here. And we feel that as rapporteurs too. It feels like we are primarily presenting new automobiles, for which we tinker with headings with the words “power” and “plug”. The same also fit the EV6. It is the first Kia electric car that is not derived from an already existing combustion model, but is based on a special electric platform. It is called E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) and represents the link to the Ioniq 5 of the sister brand Hyundai.

Lures to the long haul

At the same time, the EV6 documents the determination of its manufacturer to drive out of the corner of the former discounter with all vigor: If electric, then right and premium-worthy and with all the trimmings. This includes features that are otherwise only known from the realm of expensive top electric cars, such as the Porsche Taycan or the Audi e-tron GT. Because in order to lure its users on long journeys and save them time-consuming stays at the charging station, the EV6 makes charging very quickly. Instead of the usual 400 volts, its battery system runs up to 800 volts. This means a maximum DC charging power of 240 kW – and that the battery can be brought from a charge level of 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes at a suitable fast charging station. In the ideal case, says Kia, four and a half minutes are enough to store electricity for a distance of 100 kilometers using a fall drink. The EV6 uses the wallbox in three phases and with up to 10.5 kW.

In 3.5 seconds to 100 km

At the charging station: As a partner in the Ionity joint venture, Kia offers its customers reduced electricity prices.

There are quite a few model variants, so the configurator has a lot to do with it. The customer must first be clear about whether it should be the small battery (58 kWh) or the large one (77.4 kWh). The former gives the direction to the base model with rear-wheel drive and 125 kW / 170 PS, the latter presents the decision between 168 kW / 229 PS and – then combined with all-wheel drive – 239 kW / 325 PS. Another candidate will be added at the end of 2022, when the GT will serve as a sporty spearhead, it has an output of 430 kW / 585 PS, is also all-wheel drive, zooms from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds and reaches 260 km / h h tip. This can certainly make an impression at the regulars’ table.

Another top position, that of the king of range, is claimed by the rear-wheel drive car with 229 hp and 77.4 kWh power storage, one battery charge is sufficient for a maximum of 528 kilometers. Even the small solution – the one with 58 kWh and 170 PS – is certified by the WLTP standard to be ready for 394 kilometers. The consumption amounts to 17.2 – 16.5 or 16.6 kWh / 100 km.

Futuristic seasoning

The thing that currently works best around the world in terms of bodywork is the crossover. Kia put the 4.69 meter long EV6 into such a dress, the pattern is expressive with futuristic flavor, the high rear end with the continuous light strip is at least worth discussing, in terms of design, the Kia draft goes completely different than the one that Hyundai used angular Ioniq 5 has implemented.

Modern: interior with panorama screen and rotary control for the automatic.

On the dashboard, two screens join to form a curved panorama display, the ventilation openings underline a narrow control surface that optionally displays the buttons for the air conditioning or those for the (sometimes a bit late reacting) navigation and infotainment, switching is done with a gentle tap of the finger. The large head-up display projects three-dimensional turning instructions onto the road using augmented reality. And leather has been banned from the interior, instead Kia is providing the seats with vegan covers, and 111 PET bottles are being used in fabrics and carpets. Speaking of seats: they can optionally be brought into a relaxing position, so you can take a nap while charging, while – as is already known from the Kia Sorento plug-in hybrid, for example – the sound of the sea, the chirping of birds or the cozy soundtrack of a street café lull into relaxation mode .

Charges the e-bike

The long wheelbase of 2.90 meters removes any tightness from the five-seater interior, the trunk volume is estimated at 490 to 1300 liters, and an additional compartment under the front hood provides a home for the charging cable. Or the adapter, with which the EV6 becomes powerful in bidirectional charging and, for example, feeds the e-bike or – via a charging cable with an in-cable control box – helps other electricians on the jumps.

If the e-car driver wants to tow a trailer, they can do so; the 58 kWh model pulls up to 750 kilograms, the 77 kWh versions manage 1,600 kilograms.

Worth discussing: The high rear with a continuous strip of lights as an eye-catcher.

Size and design are contrary to a career as a curve hunter, but the two-tonne Korean can be steered dynamically and precisely around the hairpin bends, and in terms of driving comfort he cannot be denied. All sorts of electronic service personnel provide support when driving; Six recuperation levels can be selected using the paddles on the steering wheel; the auto mode, which sets the level of energy recovery based on the current traffic situation and the navigation data, is particularly clever.

When it comes to electromobility, Kia clearly knows, but it is not inconsiderable to pay for it: the entry price of the EV6 is 44,990 euros.

Kia EV6 in brief:
