Iraq announced on Monday the arrest of an important leader of the Islamic State (ISIS), responsible for the financial operations of the terrorist group and considered a key member of the organization.
He is Sami Jassem or Sami Jasim al-Jaburi, a veteran agent of the Al Qaeda network of Iraqi nationality.
His arrest, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi announced via Twitter, was carried out during a cross-border operation for which no further details were given.
According to AP, the detainee is the supervisor of the financial operations of the Islamic State and was “number two” of the late leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, killed in a US operation in northwestern Syria in October 2019.
Jassem’s arrest came while Iraqi forces were monitoring parliamentary elections across the country on Sunday.
Al-Kadhimi said it was “one of the most difficult” cross-border intelligence operations ever conducted by Iraqi forces. However, he excused himself from giving further details about the operation.
Jassem was detained in an unidentified foreign country and transferred to Iraq a few days ago.Iraqi intelligence sources cited by AP said.
