Frost-covered volcanoes, hail, swirling winds: Insivumeh’s explanation of phenomena captured in the country

This Friday, January 14, several Internet users shared unusual images related to the climate in various localities of the country.

From Patzún, Chimaltenango, users shared images of what appeared to be a huge whirlpool in formation.

Residents said that the phenomenon caused drizzles and showers with gales that caused damage to homes.

Meanwhile, the Acatenango Volcano, in Chimaltenango, was covered with frost and several images were captured by local guides.

Meanwhile, in San Lucas Tolimán, Sololá, they were captured inew formations in the crater of the Atitlán volcano, after what the residents called “the first rains of 2022”, according to the local page San Lucas Tolimán.

“It has snowed on the volcano”, the residents write.

What does the Insivumeh say

The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) gave an explanation to all these phenomena experienced in the country.

According to the entity, “a great instability generated by several systems associated with the last cold front”, are the cause of these phenomena, as well as the strong influx of moisture from the Pacific Ocean.

He warned the population to take precautions, since these phenomena, as well as the cold, they could remain or increase in the coming hours.
