The last highlight of this Thursday evening for Union supporters was probably Cyriel Dessers. The striker from Feyenoord Rotterdam equalized against Slavia Prague in stoppage time and thus improved the situation of Berlin once again: Against the Czechs, a win on the last match day is enough to make it into the play-offs of the Conference League.
Kruse: “We could have made the game more dominant”
A few minutes before Desser’s goal, Union’s game had already come to an end: The narrow 1-0 win at Maccabi Haifa was official and the chance to hibernate in international business was preserved. Max Kruse was relieved after the game: “We’re glad we won. That’s all that counts today.” His team now has the “final” that they wanted in two weeks.
The attacker was not completely satisfied with the Koepenick performance in Israel: “We could have made the game more dominant. We won a lot of the ball, but then gave the ball back straight away,” said Kruse, who added: “It is not easy here either, we are not used to the temperatures at the moment. Very different teams have not been able to win here, we have already achieved a certain performance. ” Julian Ryerson’s winning goal was Haifa’s first goal in front of a home crowd this Conference League season.
Captain Marvin Friedrich also said that this was “not our best game”. “We made too many mistakes in the first half and kept inviting Haifa to counterattacks.” He struck the same tone as coach Urs Fischer, who complained that his team had found it unnecessarily difficult in the game with the ball and had too many unnecessary, simple ball losses. “But,” said the Swiss coach: “We made it – and now we have this final at home.”
On December 9th (9 p.m., LIVE! At kicker) Union welcomes you to the Slavia Prague Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
